Situated in northeastern Thailand, just to the south of the city of Nakhon Pathom, That Phanom is a small dusty town. This is a good place to relax for a while and explore.
The town takes its name from the main attraction, which is the large stupa of Wat That Phanom. People travel from all over Thailand to see the magnificent temple, which was built more than 1,500 years ago and is believed to contain the breastbone of Lord Buddha.
Although many travelers bypass this sleepy town in favor of white sand beaches and vibrant cities, this is a good place to unwind for a while and discover some of Thailand’s subtler charms.
Getting There & Away
The best way to get to That Phanom is by bus and there is a bus station at the southern end of town with regular buses arriving from Bangkok (10 hours), Ubon Ratchathani (4 hours, 30 minutes), Udon Thani and Sakhon Nakhon (1 hour, 15 minutes).
