Situated in the far northeast of Thailand, Sakhon Nakhon is the capital of the province of the same name. The city has a population in excess of 75,000 and is known for its festivals and cultural sites.
Sakhon Nakhon is positioned on the Khorat Plateau near to the Mekong River. From Bangkok it is 402 miles to the city, while the neighboring province of Udon Thani is approximately 100 miles away. The most common mode of transport is by air to the city’s regional airport, which handles daily flights from numerous destinations.
One of the main attractions of Sakhon Nakhon is Nong Han Lake, which is the largest natural lake in the northeast of Thailand. The lake has a number of resorts and activity centers offering water sports.
Getting There & Away
Thai Airways flies from Bangkok to Sakhon Nakhon on a daily basis, with the journey taking 1 hour. Buses travel from Bangkok’s northern bus terminal, Mochit, each day. If driving, take Highway 1 to Saraburi then Highway 2 to Ban Phai, which connects with Highway 23 leading to Sakhon Nakhon.
