While often used as a staging point for traveling teachers and backpackers on a visa run, Nong Khai has a number of attractions of interest for those with the patience to do more than merely pass through. Rich in both culture and history, and famous for the hospitality of its people and the beauty of its women, Nong Khai has 18 districts that offer landscapes of beautiful natural scenery and several important religious sites.
Luang Pho Phra Sai is the predominant Buddha image of the region, enshrined within Nong Khai town at Wat Pho Chai temple. The small image in a sitting posture is said to have been cast in Lan Chang and is visited daily. In addition, the temple grounds play host to an annual rocket festival held on the day of April’s full moon.
