Also known as Nakhon Ratchasima, Khorat is the capital city of the province of Nakhon Ratchasima and one of the most populated cities in Thailand, with over 2.5 million residents.
Khorat’s central location makes it a good place to explore the surrounding provinces and areas. The city has been an important political, economic and social center since early centuries. During the early 1800s, Khorat survived an attack from the King of Vientiane, who tried to overpower the Thai stronghold.
There are numerous attractions and sights to visit in Khorat, making it a popular tourist destination with both local and foreign travelers. Khorat Zoo is world class, with a wide range of animals from around the world. The city has numerous temples and monuments including the Thao Suranee Monument, dedicated to the heroine of the 1826 Laos attack on the city.
Getting there
Being located just 160 miles from Bangkok, Khorat is easily accessible by road and rail. The train station handles services from all over Thailand, with connections from Bangkok typically taking around 3 hours. Public and private buses leave Bangkok on an hourly basis, taking only a few hours travel time. The road network to Khorat is well established, providing easy access by car if self-driving.
