Nakhon Phanom is situated 580kms northeast of Bangkok, across the Mekong River from the Laotian town of Thakhek, and the name means ‘city of hills’in the Thai language.
There are many other appealing villages around Nakhon Phanom town that make good daytrips. Hire a bicycle and head 45kms north to Nam Song Si. Another great daytrip is the cotton weaving village of Renu Nakhon, 52kms south. While here, pay a visit to the attractive Wat Phra That Renu Nakhon.
The Riverside Promenade follows the banks of the mighty Mekong River, and there are dozens of food stalls dotted along the banks from which to buy a cheap meal and watch the world go by. This is a good place to relax after a busy day exploring the lush green countryside.
Getting There & Away
There are direct flights to Nakhon Phanom twice a day from Bangkok (45 minutes). Alternatively, buses travel to Nakhon Phanom from all over Thailand, with the journey from Bangkok taking around 11 hours.
