Located in the heart of Thailand’s northeastern region known as Isaan and just less than 300 miles from Bangkok, the province of Maha Sarakham is a modestly popular holiday destination for those interested in Buddha images and handicrafts. In the village of Ban Nong Khuan Chang, nine miles outside of town, delicate handmade silks and cottons, in vibrant colors and intricate designs, are woven by local artisans and offered for sale.
The red sandstone Buddha image Mongkon Standing Buddha, from the Dvaravati period, is an often visited religious site in the area and the principal place of merit making for local Buddhists. Legend states that since the image’s creation, Maha Sarakham has not known a time without regular and plentiful rainfall.
