Kalasin, in the north-east of Thailand, is most famous for its dinosaur fossils and beautiful nature. This small, agricultural province is covered by lush, hilly landscapes offering non-affluent rural areas with friendly locals.
Local families in Kalasin make ends meet by producing sticky rice, silk and basketry. The largest dinosaur site in Thailand can also be found here at Phu Kum Khao in Sahatsakhan district.
Although quite low-key, Kalasin has many attractions, both historical and natural. Many temples dot the province, while there are several fascinating caves, including Tham Siam Sap, Tham Phra Rot and Tham Phra, to explore. Phu Phra Forest Park boasts a stunning mountain range and is home to a remarkable ancient Buddha image.
The most famous sight in Kalasin is Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site where over 700 fossilized bones have been found. Visitors to the province can also visit markets selling all kinds of local products such as Phrae Wa silk, Mudmee silk, Khit textile and basketry products.
