Located more than 500kms from Bangkok, not many tourists take the time to explore the northeastern town of Kalasin. However, the capital of this agricultural province does have a few interesting attractions.
Kalasin contains one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in northeastern Thailand, and people travel from all over the world to study them. The unique red Phrae Wa cloth with its intricate tribal pattern is also woven here and there are a number of villages nearby where visitors can watch the skill in action.
If you have time to kill and don’t fancy chilling out on one of Thailand’s sandy beaches, this is a reasonable place to kill some time. Perhaps pay a visit to the Lam Pao Wildlife Conservation Development and Promotion Station and explore the local temples.
Getting There & Away
The most straightforward way to reach Kalasin is by taking a bus from Bangkok, which will stop at the town’s bus station. Alternatively, planes fly to the neighboring cities of Ratchasima or Khon Kaen and there is a regular bus service from both of these places to Kelasin. Trains also run from the capital to Khon Kaen.
