Many places in Thailand are given poetic names and Buriram, which means ‘city of happiness’, is no exception. The town of Buriram is the capital of Buriram Province in Isan and is located roughly 410kms northeast of Bangkok.
Although not the most exciting place in Thailand, Buriram has its own rural charm. This northern town is quite a bit cooler than most of Thailand and a great way to explore the area is by hiring a bicycle and simply cycling away.
Buriram Province is steeped in history and many visitors head straight to Phanom Rung Historical Park, which is located about 40kms south of the city. There are also a number of interesting temples and other buildings to explore.
Getting There & Away
The easiest way to get here is by flying into Buriram Airport from other Thai cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket. The northeastern railway line also links Buriram with many towns in this area.
