The capital of Uthai Thani Province in northeastern Thailand, this mediocre town is surrounded by intense natural beauty, with jungles, forests, plains and a number of sparkling streams.
Although not the most exciting place in Thailand, this is a good place to get away from the crowds and relax for a while. There are a number of sights to explore such as decorative temples, each with their own unique style. Walk through the countryside and float away down the river on a wooden raft.
The Sakae Krang River is a focal point of the town and boat trips are a popular pastime. Take a walk along the banks of the river and you will see a large number of local fishermen practicing traditional techniques. Naturally, this is a good place to sample fresh fish and the local market is a good place to find a cheap meal.
Getting There & Away
The most direct way to get to Uthai Thani is by bus, a journey of around 3 to 4 hours. There is a large bus station at the edge of the town, with regular buses traveling to and from towns and cities such as Bangkok (Mo Chit), Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
