Lopburi Province Travel Guide

A charming province not far from Bangkok, Lopburi boasts many interesting sights and a lot of monkeys. Situated on the east side of the Chao Phraya river valley in the central part of Thailand, Lopburi is a convenient getaway from the bustle and hustle of Bangkok.

Exuding a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, the province offers idyllic nature and rich heritage. Lopburi town, the provincial capital, is divided into two parts: the old and the new quarters. Most historical venues can be found in the old quarter, where the train station is located.

Those into architecture will find a number of sights to please. Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is one of the most famous temples in the region, featuring a famous Buddha image and a stucco relief of Thep Phanom (angel in adoration) on every corner of the base. The beautiful Prang Sam Yot, another iconic symbol of the province, is also worth a visit.

Around the train station is where you can find a large number of monkeys that are so friendly they might just jump at you. Try not to play with them though, as these cute creatures do bite. Din so phong (marl salted eggs) and Mudmi fabric (tie-died fabric) are some of the most popular souvenirs from Lopburi.
