One of America’s most popular tourist destinations is Atlanta, and visitors to the city will soon understand why. From the fashionable West End district, with its selection of excellent clubs and bars, to the former African American downtown area of Sweet Auburn, the city is one of contradictions. Home to CNN and the several Martin Luther King Jr monuments, Atlanta will keep the interested visitor amused for weeks.
In contrast, Savannah is a sprawling 19th century city, full of quaint architecture and side streets. The city’s Historic District is home to more than 1000 well restored Regency and Federal buildings. Columbus is the state’s main port, and is interesting for its array of antebellum homes.
Music lovers should head to Athens. Home to a number of great bands, such as REM, the Indigo Girls and the B-52’s, this vibrant college town is a center of indie music.
Outside of the big cities, Georgia is a pretty state dotted with old towns and scenic views. In Stone Mountain Park you will find 90ft sculptures of Civil War leaders carved into granite cliffs. A sky lift will carry visitors to the peak top, from where they can enjoy splendid views of the grounds below. Chattahoochee National Forest is a beautiful scenic area. Lakes and forest abound, and the area is great for picnicking as well as savoring some of the last remaining culture of southern Appalachians.
Boasting magnificent and rugged mountains, the world famous Appalachian Trail runs right through Georgia. For a more homely vibe, the lovely town of Marietta is home to some old fashioned cafés and peaceful gardens. The Kennesaw Civil War Museum is also situated here.
