Probably the most famous state among spelling-bee enthusiasts, Mississippi is usually overlooked by tourists. Located in the southern US, Mississippi actually has many fascinating sights for visitors despite the lack of attention it gets.
This Magnolia state is home to handful of beautiful sandy beaches, quirky little villages and the world-famous Mississippi river. Made famous by Johnny Cash’s catchy song Jackson, the state capital is a large city with an interesting mix of blues, performing arts and history. The city’s highlights include the 100-year-old ‘new’ state capitol building that was turned into the magnificent Beaux Arts structure and the Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History housed in the ‘old’ state capitol building.
Those fascinated by plants and animals should visit the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science while Dixie National Livestock Show, Parade and Rodeo holds a heart-stopping event each year. If you’re looking for an ideal place to watch live music performances, clubs and bars off of State street are hotbeds for blues lovers. The gulf is home to two interesting cities: Biloxi and Gulfport. Biloxi is a friendly town with the impressive Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum and the Mary C O’Keefe Cultural Center, two of the most visited venues in the city.
In Gulfport, be prepared to get up close and personal with a number of resident dolphins at the Marine Life Oceanarium who will come to eat from your hands. Also take note that these gulf cities are home to several casinos so it’s a good idea to perfect your poker face before you get here.
