Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Reserve, along with Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Reserve, is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and is one of the most remote places in Kanchanaburi Province, located as it is around 300kms north of Kanchanaburi town.
The reserve spans three provinces - Kanchanaburi, Tak, and Uthai Thani - covering a huge area that includes an abundance of wildlife and forest. There are many rare animal and bird species in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Reserve as well as striking landscapes. Along with dry virgin forest and mountain virgin forest is pine forest, a bit of a rarity in Thailand.
As well as being the largest tract of wildlife in the Southeast Asian region, Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Reserve is also one of Thailand’s last tiger habitats. Attractions in the reserve include: Khao Phraya Phai Rua Cave with its many chambers and caverns, Khao Pla Ra limestone mountain range, Sa-lao Dam and the stunning Hup Pa Tad region.
Getting There & Away
Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Reserve is remote and best accessed by car from Kanchanaburi or Bangkok. Leave early in the morning from either city as much of the way is unsealed. Kanchanaburi is 3 hours by road from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
