One of Peninsular Malaysia’s best loved natural attractions, Tasik Kenyir is an enormous manmade lake. It’s locally prized as a getaway destination for nature lovers, with weekenders filing in from as far away as Singapore.

The reservoir was formed by damming the Kenyir River in Terengganu State. The lake is large enough to include a few islands, and visitors spend plenty of time on the water. Outdoor activities are the sole attraction here, ranging from simple water sports to fishing, camping and jungle trekking. Those who would rather not rough it can choose from chalets, house boats and even waterfront resorts.

The most visited spot on the reservoir is the dam itself. Visitors can climb to the top for sweeping views over the low-lying jungle. This is also a good area to launch treks, with waterfalls and caves within short hiking distance headlined by Sauk Falls and Lasir Falls.

The reservoir is home to more than 40 fish species, and fishing is a big sport here. The lake sees an influx of anglers from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur at weekends.

Getting There & Away

The best way to enjoy Tasik Kenyir and its surroundings is by hire car. Express buses connect to and from Kuala Lumpur (8 hours), where comprehensive transportation links are available. Kuala Lumpur is the most likely gate of entry for international tourists and the site of the country’s main international airport.
