Located in Shan State near the Thai border, Tachilek is the final port of call for many travelers before they cross into Thailand via the Friendship Bridge that spans the stream between Tachilek and Mae Sai.

Although not the most exciting place in the country, many people pause here for an hour or two to bid farewell to Myanmar. Bear in mind that if you plan to cross the border into the Thai town of Mai Sai you must first obtain a permit from the MTT offices in Yangon.

Tachilek is quite small and it is easy to explore on foot. You can also hire a bicycle to explore the surrounding countryside if you have time to kill. Pay a visit to the town’s gilded pagoda and visit the market in the morning for a last chance to sample traditional local produce.

Getting There & Away

There are direct flights from Yangon to Tachilek (1 hour). There are also regular buses from Kengtung (4 hours). The most common way here, however, is on foot via the border checkpoint with Thailand’s Mae Sai.

Tachilek attractions
