Sa Dec is a river port in Dong Thap Province of the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam and is a popular launch point from which to see the Delta by boat, other than from My Tho and Can Tho.
As former capital of Dong Thap province, Sa Dec is one of the largest towns in the Mekong Delta and is today one of quiet, tree-lined streets and old colonial villas. It was used as the setting for the movie The Lover, based on Marguerite Duras’ novel, and visitors can see two of the French villas that were used in the film.
Sa Dec is mainly visited for its proximity to some of the most delectable Mekong Delta scenery and boat trips go from the left bank of the Bassac River. Those on Mekong Delta tours from Ho Chi Minh City will often quickly pass through Sa Dec on a lunch stop.
