Situated in the very north of Myanmar, Putao is home to Mount Khakhaborazi, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Most people travel to Putao to climb the mighty peak and enjoy the area’s natural beauty.
Formerly known as Hkamti Long, Putao is located in a restricted area and visitors must first obtain a permit from Myanmar Travel & Tours, which can be obtained in Yangon. To be sure of success, it is best to join a mountaineering group before applying for a permit.
Putao means Great Place of Gold in the Hkamti Shan language, and visiting this area provides a rare opportunity to get to know the Hkamti Shan people and their unique culture. The area is also home to some interesting wildlife such as red pandas, black bears and black deer. Wander through the wilderness and you will encounter endless beauty and tranquillity which is unparalleled in other parts of the country.
Getting There & Away
There are twice weekly flights from Myitkyina to Putao (1 hour), with regular connecting flights from Yangon (2 hours, 30 minutes). Buses also connect Putao with other Myanmar cities but foreigners are prohibited from using these services.
