The Perhentian Islands huddle in the distance offshore from the Malaysian state of Terengganu. Blessed with beautiful white sand beaches and rich coral reefs, the Perhentians are a hotspot for diving and snorkeling.
The islands’ interiors are cloaked in thick jungles that are perfect for trekking. The most intrepid hikers may come across colonies of monkeys deep in the forest along with monitor lizards and bizarre insects. Trekking takes second stage to diving, leaving a secluded and semi-private network of trails for those who brought their hiking boots.
It’s worth mentioning that Pulau Perhentian is part of one of Malaysia’s most conservative states so alcohol isn’t as free flowing as it is in other resort destinations. Many of the dry restaurants allow guests to bring in their own bottles. Expect high prices when alcohol is available.
Getting There & Away
Pulau Perhentian can only be reached by boat from Kuala Besut. Speed boats charge per person fares and complete the journey in 30 to 45 minutes. Slow boats are available for charter, take substantially longer and are only a slightly better value (when full). Buses from Kuala Besut connect to Kuala Lumpur (9 hours) and Penang (6 hours) where international airports await.
