Pulau Besar is an idyllic island in Malaysia, which is home to a lovely beach and crystal blue sea water. Pulau Besar sits only five kilometers from the mainland and the jungle cloaked hills in the heart of the island provide nice views and hiking trails.
The surrounding reefs are alive with unusual corals and marine life. The majority of the guest houses line the back of the beaches, but the island is quiet and serene with neighboring Pulau Tioman proving more popular accommodation.
The island is only four kilometers long and one kilometer wide and its name translates from the Malay for ‘Boar Island’, due to its previous abundance of wild boar that used to inhabit the area. It is mainly frequented by visitors enjoying a long weekend break.
Getting There & Away
There is an airstrip on Pulau Tioman which can be used before jumping on a private boat that can be booked through your guest house. Ferry services also run daily to Pulau Tioman, where you can get a water taxi to Pulau Besar, which again is best booked through your resort before arriving. The nearest major domestic airport is in Senai, Johor Bahru (3 hours away), where you can connect to Kuala Lumpur’s international airport. Travel by road from the capital takes around 4 hours.
