This town is synonymous with its cathedral, which hosts the largest Catholic congregation in a Vietnamese region. It is popular with both Vietnamese and foreign tourists.
The cathedral dates back to the 19th century and is functioning again after a period of silence. This part of the country has plenty of practicing Catholics (more than 100,000) thanks to decades of French colonization. Mass is held twice daily.
There are at least a dozen churches dotting the countryside. While most tourists come solely to see the cathedral, there are a few other sites worth checking out if you’re already in town. A large Buddhist pagoda counterbalances the cathedral, and there is also a photogenic covered bridge.
Getting There & Away
Hanoi with its large airport is the main gateway to the region for international passengers. From here it takes two hours to reach Ninh Binh by bus (2 hours, 30 minutes by train). Another hour by bus will take you to Phat Diem. An alternative is to hire a driver in Ninh Binh.

At the base of the bell tower are two stone platforms where visiting royalty could watch the liturgy without getting too close.
