Ninh Binh is loaded with historical landmarks because Hoa Lu (now the district head of the province) was once the capital city of Dai Co Viet (the former name of Vietnam) in the 10th century. In Hoa Lu, the remains of temples (restored in the 17th century), dedicated to King Dinh and King Le are to be found. Another interesting spot is the Phat Diem cathedral.

Ninh Binh city, the capital of the province, provides varied accommodation possibilities to cater to the needs of travelers. It is a good launching point for trips to Cuc Phuong National Park, where trekking is organized and the Endangered Primates Rescue Center can be visited.

The most famous spot of the province is Tam Coc (‘three caves’), often called the ‘Ha Long on Land’ and compared with Guilin in China. These limestone formations provide stunning scenery, and winding your way through the river will give you the chance to visit Hang Ca, Hang Guia and Hang Cuoi caves.

During a river tour you will meet friendly local Vietnamese selling food, drink and other items. Nearby there is the 15th century Bich Dong pagoda, famous among French tourists because of the movie Indochine, starring Catherine Deneuve.

Ninh Binh province is easily accessed from Hanoi by national roads. Motorbikes or taxis can be rented from Ninh Binh city, or you can choose to join an organized tour.
