Lumut is a fishing town that operates an important base for the Malaysian Navy so visitors will see sailors everywhere they go. Despite a recent barrage of investment and ad campaigns, this city doesn’t attract many tourists.
The biggest investment in recent years is the waterfront promenade, a project that started in 2004 and is slated for completion in 2010. This area boasts a spread of entertainment and dining options that can keep visitors engaged for an evening.
But the main reason visitors come to Lumut is to catch a ferry to Pulau Pangkor, with several departures a day. The journey takes less than an hour. The upside to all of the ongoing construction is an abundance of accommodation options. Anyone who misses the last ferry has plenty of hotels to choose from.
Getting There & Away
Lumut is almost equidistance between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and both of these cities boast prominent international airports. The city itself is offset from the main expressway so overland travel times are long. The alternative is to catch the ferry to Pulau Pangkor, where there’s an airport with quick and regular connections to Subang Airport at Kuala Lumpur.
