Capital of Lang Son Province in the northeast of Vietnam, the town of Lang Son is a Chinese gateway to Vietnam and the area has many interesting facets for tourists.

The French were defeated a number of times in Lang Son during their colonial spell in Vietnam and the town was also the center of fighting during the 1979 Third Indochina War (Third Sino-Vietnamese War).

The main highlights of a visit to Lang Son are located within the town’s suburbs. Tam Thanh cave is the main attraction, featuring as it does a natural pool and many Buddhist altars. People come here to worship and visitors can take a look out of a natural window across paddy fields.

Lang Son has plenty of cheap hotels and guest houses as well as a market and numerous restaurants. The Chinese border is a few kilometers north at Dong Dang.

Getting There & Away

Lang Son is accessible from Hanoi via Highway 1A as well as by rail. Buses and trains leave Hanoi regularly for the Chinese border and stop in Lang Son. Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport is an hour north of the capital and around 4 or 5 hours from Lang Son.
