Along National Road No.5 from Phnom Penh to Oudong there are several small villages that are still engaged in the traditional production of silver-works.

Kompong Luong, in Preak G’dam commune, was sponsored by the Cambodian Craft Corporation and a German social-enterprise, and many of their wares are transported to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh for sale in the major markets.

Simply watching the villagers pound and shape the copper alloy, which is then plated with silver, offers an intriguing look into one of cambodia’s traditional handicrafts trades. You can also purchase souvenirs for cheaper than you will be able to purchase anywhere else: jewelry, cutlery, betel-nut boxes, and small containers in the shapes of various animals, including bulls and frogs!

The workshops are located outside traditional wooden homes between the road and the Tonle Sap River and are not difficult to find if you follow the directions below and ask your driver that you are looking for the village.

Preak G’dam is located 23 miles (37 km) from Phnom Penh. The small dirt road that leads into the village is just off National Road No. 5, just before a statue of a general on horseback that is opposite a soccer/football field; watch for a fading, blue Cambodian Craft Corporation sign on the right hand side of the road.
