Capital of the Malaysian state of Perlis, Kangar is low-key and of little interest to international visitors. The only reason you’re likely to visit is a change of buses, and there are numerous restaurants and coffee shops onsite to occupy you while waiting.

Kangar is modern and of greater interest to locals, who come here periodically for supplies and ‘big city’ entertainment. Most of the hotels and restaurants, especially the budget options, are within walking distance of the bus station. Opting for the higher end is advisable as a modest up charge affords much nicer accommodation.

There aren’t really any tourist attractions in the city so anyone in need of a diversion will have to get out of town. The most popular attraction in the state is Gua Kelam, a cave outside of the local state park. There’s also some decent hiking and rock climbing in the countryside.

Getting There & Away

Kangar is Perlis‘ transportation hub, and as it sits near the border with Thailand it’s convenient to connect to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur here. Traveling to Kuala Lumpur is straightforward and can be accomplished by bus in 6 hours or by train. Buses to Penang take less than an hour and bring passengers to the nearest major international airport.
