Ipoh is the state capital of Perak, located approximately two hours north of Kuala Lumpur. However, it is like a serene little sister in comparison. It is a popular weekend getaway for many locals in Kuala Lumpur, but often overlooked by many tourists.

Known to many as Hill City, Ipoh is surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful landscapes which open the door to numerous trekking opportunities. However, trekking and other outdoor sports were not always so popular. The hills were once home to large tin mines which ensured the economic prosperity of the town and during the British Colonial Era Ipoh was actually the second city of Malaysia.

The growth of the city was unfortunately cut short because of the closure of the mines and many residents were forced to move to other areas, in particular to Kuala Lumpur. Ipoh has struggled for identity ever since, with the city only recently becoming a popular weekend getaway destination.

Ipoh’s cuisine is famous throughout Malaysia and many people travel from across the country, and even as far as Singapore, to taste the food on offer. There are many restaurants located throughout the town although remember that price does not always reflect quality here.

Ipoh is a sprawling city which can be explored largely on foot as the sights within the city are located close to each other. There are a number of popular sights and as the city is slightly off the beaten track, you will not be surrounded by other tourists. For sights and scenery out of town, taxis are available but fares should be negotiated up front.

Getting There & Away

Ipoh has its own airport, Sultan Azlan Shah Airport, but it is very quiet, only serving domestic destinations and small planes. The nearest major airport is Kuala Lumpur’s KLIA. From here you can fly to Ipoh in 15 minutes or catch a bus, which will take approximately 2 hours.
