Hsipaw is an interesting non-touristy town in northeastern Myanmar, not far from Mandalay. It sits in a valley and comes with several interesting attractions as well as beautiful surroundings.
The town is on the main Highway 3, between Mandalay and China’s Yunnan Province - a well traveled route - and comes with a fun market in downtown Hsipaw. The Central Market sees all sorts of hill tribe-people, including Shan and Kachin, bringing in their wares to sell. The market is especially good for picking up Shan clothes and headdresses but unfortunately opens really early and shuts at sunrise.
The main attraction for many in Hsipaw is the surrounding countryside, which is relatively easy to explore without the need of a guide. You can go on hikes to waterfalls and see hill tribes with Mr Charles for an easier time. Mr Charles also does boat trips. Other Hsipaw attractions include the Shan Palace, Five and Nine Buddha hills, and the Bawgyo Paya Shan pagoda a few miles out of town.
Getting There & Away
The fastest way to Hsipaw is by bus or taxi from Mandalay although the train journey to Hsipaw is an intriguing one and could be combined with a return by road. The nicest part of the journey by rail is the bit between Pyin u Lwin and Hsipaw - the complete journey takes 15 hours. Mandalay International Airport is an hour from the city and receives flights from all over Myanmar, including from Yangon, the main international gateway.
