Hon Lao is one of the many islands that lies just off the coast of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province. It is a quieter alternative to Nha Trang and comes with some decent snorkeling.
Hon Lao is also known as Monkey Island and is a tiny retreat from Nha Trang of around 30 hectares. It has some beautiful beaches which are backed by coconut palms and has a fair amount of coral reef and exotic fish for snorkelers to enjoy. The best place on Hon Lao to snorkel is the coral reef just offshore to the east.
Many people who visit Hon Lao tend to island hop in the Nha Trang bay area. Hon Tre is the largest island here and comes complete with a busy theme park in the north and good diving in the south. It is accessible from Nha Trang by cable car. To the south is smaller Hon Mun for the best snorkeling and diving in the region.
Getting There & Away
The only way into Hon Lao is by boat from Nha Trang and they sail throughout the day, with a transfer time of one hour. Getting to Nha Trang is straightforward as it has a small airport, with flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (the closest), plus trains and buses serve the city regularly from both cities. Highway 1 also takes in Nha Trang.
