Hoa Lu was capital of Vietnam in the 10th century and today’s tourists have the opportunity to visit ancient sites as well as to get out in the countryside and explore the unique, rocky landscape.

Backed by the Yen Ngua Mountain Range, Hoa Lu is characterized by oddly-shaped limestone features (called karst formations). In the old days, these quirky outcroppings made it easier to defend the capital. These days they offer more in the way of atmosphere, especially for hikers.

It is possible to charter boat rides along ancient canals that meander through karst formations and centuries-old rice paddies. Otherwise, there are plenty of ruins worth exploring in the old city. Restoration work has been half-hearted and many of the most ancient structures (including the Citadel) are in pretty bad condition.

Getting There & Away

Ninh Binh is the closest town (seven miles away), but there are no public transportation links. The turnoff is along National Highway 1A, and it is easy to hire a car or motorbike in Ninh Binh. The back roads here are also nice for cycling. Hanoi is the closest major city, boasting an enormous airport and can be reached by car in less than three hours.
