Hai Phong is situated in the center of the Red River, approximately 100kms from Hanoi. It is the central seaport for the whole of northern Vietnam and is a tourist destination in its own right.
It has been of significant importance for hundreds of years and, during French rule, it was Vietnam’s most important trading center and was also the main port during the Vietnam War, although was subject to heavy bombing. It was rebuilt and in recent years has become very popular with tourists and is often a stopover on Southeast Asian cruises.
There are many places of interest for visitors including elephant camps, small islands, the harbor, cathedrals, colonial buildings and even an amusement park for children. The scenery is stunning and there are a number of green expanses which are perfect for sitting back and relaxing. The port is, of course, a major hub of activity and it is where you will find excellent seafood restaurants and some very nice coffee shops.
Getting There & Away
Hai Phong is best reached by local bus from Hanoi. The capital is home to the international airport and receives daily flights from countries throughout Southeast Asia as well as domestic services. The journey from Hanoi to Hai Phong is approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes.
