Situated on the central northern coast of Vietnam, Dong Hoi serves as capital to Quang Binh province. It has over seven miles of coastline with beautiful fine, sandy beaches and a fresh water lake that supplies the town.
To the south is the Demilitarized Zone, also referred to as the DMZ, the area of land that used to separate the north from the south and is a popular sightseeing tour for people that have an interest in the Vietnam War.
It is more comfortable than its sister town to the south of DMZ, Dong Ha, most likely due to the fact it is located on the side that won the war. Most tourists leave this stop off their list of places to visit but it is a good place to break up the long haul when traveling from Hanoi to Hue.
Getting There & Away
Dong Hoi has many different transportation options. The newly opened airport serves Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Bai (Hue) International Airport is the nearest major airport and a 4-hour drive from Dong Hoi. The Reunification train line terminates here and goes to Hanoi and Hue. A train from Hanoi to Dong Hoi takes about 9 hours and from Hue to Dong Hoi takes about 3 hours. A bus station also serves all major cities in Vietnam and some in Laos.
