The central Thai province of Chai Nat neighbours four provinces: Nakhon Sawan, Suphan Buri, Sing Buri and Uthai Thani. Perhaps best known for its tasty pomelo fruit, Chao Phraya dam and bird park, the province attracts mostly Thai tourists.
Situated in the river plain of the country’s primary river, the Chao Phraya, the province is home to Thailand’s largest irrigation system and the huge Chao Phraya dam. The capital of the same name, which means ‘place of victory’, is home to the Chai Nat bird garden (Suan Nok Chai Nat), the largest bird park on the continent.
Also of note in Chai Nat are numerous Buddhist temples, including the Ayutthaya period Wat Thamma Mulviharn and Wat Thammamun Worawihan, home to a beautiful standing Buddha image.
Accommodation in the province mainly caters to Thai tourists, but there are a few guesthouses suited to foreigners. Access is by train or bus from Bangkok, with regular coaches departing from the Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit).
