Chainat is the capital of the province of the same name. It is located in central Thailand, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, and is a rural town and home to an important farming community.
Despite not having a developed infrastructure, there are still many sights and cultural happenings to enjoy and experience throughout the year. As with many small towns in central Thailand, Chainat is rarely visited by tourists, but if you have time to venture out of Bangkok, you will be rewarded with scenes from the ‘real’ Thailand.
Things to see include temples, a bird sanctuary, museums, a crocodile farm, a large dam and a monkey park. The town dates back to the 16th century and despite recent development, it still boasts old stilted Thai houses and ancient ruins, while the locals still live by time-honored traditions. It is a glimpse into the everyday life of rural Thailand and a chance to get to know another side to this multi-faceted country.
