Locals refer to the Central Market as Psar Thmei, which means “New Market” so as not to confuse it with the now “Old Market.” Now the main market in Phnom Penh, the Central Market isn’t quite the “Wal-Mart” that Siem Reap’s main market is, but its a beautiful building with products that satisfy both local and visiting shopper needs.

The Central Market was constructed in 1937 and has been a landmark ever since, with its Art Deco style and creamy yellow paint providing aesthetic beauty as much today as it must have in the French Colonial hey-day.

Fun to visit as a cultural experience or to wander around until you stumble across something you need or desire, Central Market is far cleaner, cooler, and easier to explore than Phnom Penh’s other markets, though visitors should keep a watchful eye out for pick-pockets. When purchasing goods, its also best to shop around, negotiate in a good natured way, and be aware of variations in quality, particularly if in the market for jewelry or gemstones.

The market is also the departure location for many busses heading in all directions out of Phnom Penh. There are other stations, but this one is convenient and tickets can be purchased on-site. If you wish to hire a private taxi or join a share taxi anywhere in Cambodia, do some research the day before departure as to prices and typical departure times.

Early in the morning when temperatures are cooler, the market is livelier, and lower prices can typically be negotiated.

Its located pretty much in the center of Phnom Penh, so just tell a tuk tuk driver “Central Market” or “Psar Thmei”
