Located in the northwestern corner of Arkansas, Bentonville is perhaps most famous for being the headquarters of Wal-Mart. The city has managed to preserve its historic character, with 72 historical buildings and residences within the city limits. A walking tour is a great way to take in the old-time feel and the city is also a convenient base from which to tour northwest Arkansas.
There’s no way around Wal-Mart for visitors to Bentonville and one of the most popular attractions is the original Sam Walton’s five and dime store. Now serving as Wal-Mart Visitor Center, it is a museum dedicated to the Walton family as well as to the history of possibly the most successful retail enterprise ever.
Highlights
The Peel Mansion Museum and Garden: was built in 1875 and is now a museum, with historic roses, perennials and native plants growing in the beautiful grounds.
Round the Square: is a popular crafts and produce market held around the square every Saturday, from the last Saturday in April through the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
Benton County Fairgrounds: feature fairs, arts and craft shows and many special events, including miniature horse shows.
Lakes: surrounding Bentonville offer outdoor fun, with Beaver Lake being one of the most popular destinations. ****
