Aungban is a quiet town in central Myanmar, located to the southeast of Mandalay and due east of Meiktila. There’s not much to see here and if you have come to visit Inle Lake, you’d be better off carrying on to Nyaungshwe.
Aungban lies in the Shan State amid some stunning scenery although is mainly visited as a stop-off place heading for Taunggyi on Highway 4, or Inle Lake south from here. It is also a rail terminus for the new line down to Loikaw, south of Inle Lake.
Nearby attractions, apart from Inle Lake, include Pindaya Caves, near the town of Pindaya, with their thousands of Buddha images and a limestone ridge that affords nice views over the area. The former British colonial hill station town of Kalaw to the east is also worth a look for its hill tribe trekking and for the Nee Paya ancient bamboo Buddha image.
