As capital of Henan Province, Zhengzhou is the biggest and most thriving city in the region. It sits on the Yellow River and while not remarkable for tourists, it makes a good start point for nearby cultural sites.

Zhengzhou has plenty of history owing to its strategic location in the center of the country. It has seen much development over the last few generations. Zhengzhou makes the ideal launch point for visits to nearby Kaifeng and Luoyang, also on the Yellow River. In addition, the revered Shaolin Temple is within reach.

Zhengzhou has numerous museums for those interested in learning more about the region. The Erqi Memorial Tower features one of the most interesting of Zhengzhou’s museums and has a unique setting and location. Nearby Erqi (February 7) Square is also the best place to shop. For drinking, head to Wei Yi Lu.

Avoid Zhengzhou Zoo.
