Yumuzhai is a small, remote village in southwestern Hubei Province, central China. It is a sleepy hamlet and a pain to get to, thus is only really appealing to those who enjoy out of the way places.

Yumuzhai lies amid rolling, terraced hills. It is a tough 18kms from Moudao - the nearest settlement - which in turn is several hundred kilometers from the Hubei capital of Wuhan. There is a small airport in Enshi, but getting here is generally a pain.

Yumuzhai mainly consists of the Tujia ethnic minorities, who have their own language and customs. There are no real attractions in Yumuzhai bar the peace and quiet of the place and the chance to explore away from the tourist hordes. Avoid visiting in wet weather as it is tough driving.

Getting There & Away

Yumuzhai is best accessed by sleeper bus between Yichang and Lichuan (10 hours), from where four-wheel drive tours run to Yumuzhai a further 60kms or so. The nearest airport is at Enshi. Flight time from Shanghai is 2 hours.
