Yengisar is a county and city in southwest Xinjiang Autonomous Region, western China. It is a small town on the Silk Road and makes an interesting stop-off when traveling the Hotan-Kashgar route.

The main claim to fame of Yengisar is its mind-boggling collection of knives. There are many knife factories and knife shops here. It’s not worth coming here solely for knives however as Kashgar has its own huge supply.

The Xiaodaochang knife factory in downtown Yengisar is worth a tour. The craftsmen are highly skilled and do every process themselves. The factory is located within Yengisar Bazaar. If you have time, be sure to also take a look at the mosque.

Getting There & Away

Yengisar is halfway between Yengisar and Yarkand and buses come through here all the time - 1 hour, 30 minutes journey time in either direction. Hotan is a further 6 hours, 30 minutes from Yengisar. Kashgar has a small airport which receives flights from the provincial capital Urumqi.
