Xichang is a sizeable city in southwest Sichuan Province, which is connected to the capital, Chengdu, by train and highway. Xichang is in nomad country and is a good base for trekking.
Xichang is often known as Moon City, owing to the fresh air and clear skies down here. It lies on a route that used to go past the mountain territories of the Naxi Kingdom of Yongning and the Lama Kingdom of Muli, regions of remote monasteries and dense mountain forests.
Treks start in Xichang and head for the Yunnan provincial border at the stunning Lugu Lake, about 200kms to the west. They go by way of extensive woodland and remote villages and can offer the best fishing in Sichuan in the springtime. Nearby Lion Mountain has good trekking.
Getting There & Away
Xichang is very remote and flying here is the most convenient option. Xichang Qingshan Airport receives limited flights from Chengdu and Chongqing. Flight time is under an hour from either city. Trains also wind their way here between Chengdu and Dukou, while buses take a good 12 hours along the G108.
