This unique county in Yunnan Province is home to a substantial number of the Lisu ethnic minority (more than half the county’s population). Tourists come for unique cultural experiences.

Most of the county is laid out in forested mountains where locals lead a simple, agricultural lifestyle. Visiting the villages in the outlying countryside reveals an impressive variety of agricultural products. The best way to enjoy Weixi Lisu Autonomous County is to hire a guide in Weixi City and venture out to the remote villages.

Weixi itself is a small city by Chinese standards, home to 150,000 people. Accommodation is easy to arrange in guest houses and hotels, and prices span budget and mid-range options.

The Lisu people have their own unique culture and traditions. There are several festivals throughout the year, marked by traditional dances and feasting. While most people have at least a degree of Mandarin proficiency, some of the older Lisu people are unlikely to speak the mother tongue. When hiring a guide, be sure to connect with someone who understands the customs and language of the villages you plan to visit.

Getting There & Away

Weixi is far removed from the rest of China, and the nearest major city is Lijiang (6 hours by bus). From here there are frequent flights to Kunming’s international airport (less than an hour). Flights are also available to regional capitals like Shanghai and Chengdu.
