Weihai’s greatest claim to fame (or infamy) is an historical event that locals would rather not talk about. But today’s tourists are more likely here for the coastline and Liugong Island, and history’s all but forgotten.

Weihai sits squarely on the coast and Liugong Island (in the bay but within city limits) was the birthplace of China’s navy. The embarrassing event in the late 19th century was a confrontation between China’s brand-new navy (outfitted with modern military ships) and a much smaller Japanese fleet. Despite all of its resources, China was quashed in this encounter.

Today, Liugong is more a heritage destination with memorials to the Chinese navy as well as scant remains of the British colonial presence that leased the area in the early 20th century. There are also a few beaches along the coastline that rate well with locals.

Getting There & Away

Weihai is a popular launching point for ferries to Incheon, South Korea (15 hours). Otherwise, the city is connected by bus to Yantai (1 hour), Beijing (13 hours) or Shanghai (16 hours). Express trains to Beijing and Shanghai complete the journey a bit faster.
