Wat Phra That Chang Kham is the second most important temple in downtown Nan after Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, and dates back to the 14th century.
It has undergone restoration on its murals, which had been painted over at some stage. The temple’s most notable feature is the gold-capped chedi behind the viharn, which is supported by elephant statues.
The viharn that stands in front of the chedi is unremarkable from the outside, but the interior is very lush, with red and black pillars leading to a huge, gleaming Buddha image on the altar. Next door, a bot contains a standing Buddha image in a glass casket, and the temple compound around is often noisy with the shrieks of schoolchildren who might want to practice their English with you if you have time.

It is easy to walk to Wat Phra That Chang Kham from downtown Nan, which is a 5-hour bus journey from Chiang Mai.
