Located in spacious grounds at the junction of Highways 102 and 1041, about 7km southwest of Uttaradit, Wat Phra Taen Sila-At is a popular destination for Thai merit makers, and there’s also a school on the grounds.
The temple’s most precious possession is a laterite sermon platform that is thought to have originated in the Sukhothai era, though such an obscure object is unlikely to excite most Western visitors.
However, the interior walls of the viharn are covered with some strikingly detailed and realistic murals depicting various aspects of Thai culture, and nearby is a local ‘museum’, which in reality is more of a painter’s workshop, where some of these detailed images are on sale.
