Since this temple is located just a few steps west of Wat Phumin in the town center, it’s worth taking a look while in the area. It is notable for a few key features, namely Nan’s city pillar, a striking white exterior, and some vibrant murals on the inner walls of the bot.

The shrine to the city pillar and temple roof catch the eye from the street, as every surface is smothered in elaborate stucco carvings, and all is painted white. Locals frequently drop by to make offerings to the city pillar, a tall gold pillar draped in colorful robes. Though some may feel that the temple exterior decoration is a bit over the top, a pleasant surprise awaits inside.

The murals at Wat Ming Muang cannot compete with those at Wat Phumin for hiostorical importance, as they have been added only recently. However, they are so vibrant and detailed that they give modern visitors a much clearer idea of local lifestyles about a century ago, with scenes like boat racing, weaving and venerating elephants.

You can walk from anywhere in downtown Nan, or include it on a cycling tour of Nan’s temples.
