These two Shan-style temples, both originally built in the 19th century, are eye-catching examples of Shan temple architecture, so don’t forget to take your camera when you go.
Both are active temples, and you’re likely to pass rooms where novices are learning or monks are chanting.
You’ll find your eyes drawn upward by the delightfully decorated rooftops of the temples’ viharn as well as the soaring spires of the chedi in both temples. Wat Jong Sung has three chedi that are about a hundred years old, and they’re beginning to show their age with vegetation sprouting from cracks in the plaster.
Wat Si Boonruang is in somewhat better shape, and the filigree work on the temple’s rooftops appears to have been recently retouched, creating a stunning sight.
Getting There
You can walk from any hotel or guesthouse in Mae Sariang. The temples are on the north side of Wiang Mai Road, about half-way along the road.
