Built in the late 1990s to honor the life and work of the Princess Mother (the mother of King Bhumibol), this eye-catching stupa has quickly become the most recognizable icon of Mae Salong.

Perched near the top of a steep hill above town, it is visible from miles around, and the views from the top are truly breath-taking, as is the journey up there.

If you don’t have your own transport or hire a motorbike taxi to take you up, you’re facing a climb of over 700 steps up from Wat Santikhiri to reach it, but once you get there you’ll be met with some memorable views down over the town and the hills of North Thailand that seem to stretch out forever.

The pyramid-shaped chedi looks splendid from a distance, and up close you can admire the intricate gold carvings above the doorways, but there’s nothing to see inside, and you’re more likely to spend your time here recovering from the exhausting trek or hair-raising ride up the back of the hill, as well as taking photos of the view.

With your own transport, take the right turn just west of the Khum Nai Phol Resort and follow it along a treacherously steep climb to the top. On foot, follow the sign from the town center, passing the Mae Salong Resort and Wat Santikhiri and then climbing the apparently endless steps.
