Waley is a small town situated some 40 miles from the larger destination of Mae Sot in Thailand’s Tak Province. With its proximity to the Myanmar border, Waley has something of a reputation as a smuggling point.

The town saw its greatest development off the back of the timber trade with Myanmar, but this eventually came to an end for political reasons. Since then, the town has become known for its teak furniture production.

Though there isn’t a great deal to do in Waley, this is something of its appeal. With mass tourism decidedly absent, the town retains a traditional rural charm and an ambiance that has long since been lost in more developed parts of the country.

Getting There & Away

Waley can be reached by songthaew (covered pick-up truck) from Mae Sot, with services running every 30 minutes between 06:00 and 18:00. The airport in Chiang Mai is the closest to Waley and travelers landing here can take a taxi to Arcade Bus Station from where there are bus services to Mae Sot (3 hours). Travelers arriving at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport can transfer to Mo Chit Bus Station then take public buses to Mae Sot (8 hours).
