Waikelo is a waterfall not far from the town of Waikabubak in West Sumba. It is a side attraction for those staying in Waikabubak, Pero Beach or the Kodi District.

While Waikelo waterfall is pretty impressive it is not worth visiting Sumba Island for on its own. Matayung waterfall farther afield is bigger than Waikelo, with its three large tiers and hydroelectric plant.

The main attractions in West Sumba and within reach of Waikelo waterfall are the capital, Waikabubak, with its nearby hilltop ancient village of Tarung, the coastal Kodi District and Pero Beach. Kodi has plenty of traditional villages to visit and beaches to bask on, including the Sumbanese village of Bandokodi. This village is one of the major venues of the annual Pasola Festival.

Also worth checking out in the area is the traditional village of Anakalang and huge Pero Beach, which comes with good surf.

Getting There & Away

There is an airport relatively near to Waikabubak, yet the best way in is by way of the Sumba capital city of Waingapu, 140kms to the east. It receives short flights from Kubang (West Timor) as well as from the international airport at Denpasar, Bali in 1 hour, 20 minutes. Ferries come in from Kubang in the east and from Flores to the north.
